opens fire, killing a man who they say was pointing a knife at him. mike schuh is live with more on what happened. good morning, mike. >> reporter: good morning. county police say that their officer stopped a man behind this gas station and what happened next is up for investigation. >> the officer on routine patrol passes this shell station around 3:45 in the morning. behind the building a suspicious man. police say when the officer asked the man to come out he pulled a knife. >> the officer did attempt to use a tauzer -- a taser but it was ineffective. the man continued at the officer still has the knife and refused repeated commands to drop the knife. >> fearing for his safety the officer shot the man in the chest. 36-year-old gregory stegall dies at the scene. >> you have to be crazy to go towards a cop with something. >> robert mills moved his family out of the city to avoid crime. now he realizes no place is immune so violence. >> life goes on, you have to come out and do what you have to do. you do what you can to stay safe. >> reporter: now some neighbors tell eyewitness news tha

family to get back to twork mework to meet the loo deadline. mike is at the white house. let's start with you. the consensus around the hill is that we are more likely than not to go over the fiscal cliff, but there is a small chance harry reid could take a house pass bill and amend it and send it back over to the house. what are you hear being that? >> conceivably, but when the president lights upon the south lawn and the marine one later this morning, it's unclear why he is coming back and who will be here with him. as you mentioned, speaker boehner remains in ohio where he is from. he is not coming back to washington. neither is the house of representatives. they simply said it's up to harry reid in the senate. is he preparing a bill? there was a lot of talk of small ball. a bill to allow taxes to go up on everybody or at least couples that make more than $250,000 a year. $200,000 with single filers. harry reid said he is not going to prepare a bill unless mitch mcconnell allows it to come for a vote for a simple majority. they are seeking assurances that he won't try to block it.

. weather channel meteorologist mike seidel is live near buffalo. it looks like the snow has subsided a wee bit? >> reporter: it has in upstate new york, richard. roads in great shape. they don't mess around up here. the new york state thruway will take it down toward the city and toward the mass pike. it's very wet, but the slush is gone. they treated, they plowed and they've been out with a full complement of trucks. buffalo had only had 6 inches of snow until yesterday, but now they have picked up 11 inches. right here on this cornest lath night, look at the wind and snow. man, it was good stuff. it was about 24 degrees, not to cold, a powdery snow, snowing at over an inch an hour. now we go to torington, connecticut. the suburbs had some snow, and this morning of all things, thunderstorms rolled through new york city. out there they had about 4, 5, 6 inches there in the hills of connecticut. you can see that white, that massive white in new england across the ski resorts, some of those spots would end up with a storm total of 12 to 18 inches, richard. this storm pulls out. it's had a ch
